Indiana Jones meets Bridgerton in this "champagne fizz of a romance" from a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author (The New York Times).
Bold, curvy Elizabeth Wynchester loves cuddling hedgehogs almost as much as she adores vanquishing villains with the sharp blade concealed inside her cane. Despite others’ opinions about her body and gender, nothing will stop her from seeing justice done. When her next mission drops her at the dastardly Earl of Densmore’s castle, she’s prepared to duel like gentlemen—only to be locked inside! Her trusty sword cannot defeat the castle’s hidden traps… or protect her heart from the devilishly handsome rogue guarding the keep.
When reclusive inventor Stephen Lenox agreed to impersonate his cousin for a few days, he didn’t expect the earl to vanish altogether. Nor could Stephen predict mounting death threats…or the arrival of a beguiling, blade-wielding spinster who declares herself his new bodyguard.
As the earl’s enemies lay siege to the castle, Stephen fights his way past Elizabeth’s defenses. She’ll share his bed, but when the adventure concludes, she vows to sever their affair. Unless he can somehow convince a swashbuckling siren to surrender her heart…

Elizabeth Wynchester would personally have preferred a more sword-intensive approach to dealing with the Earl of Densmore, but she promised her family she would try talking first. Tasked by her family with locating a missing will that will prove the Earl of Densmore is not the rightful owner of Castle Harbrook, Elizabeth sets out for Dorset. Upon arriving at Castle Harbrook, Elizabeth finds a way to breach its defenses only to discover that Densmore is gone, leaving his cousin Stephen Lenox behind to impersonate him. Prepped to do battle with the arrogant earl, Elizabeth instead finds her own defenses slowly weakened by the brainy and surprisingly buff Stephen. Ridley continues to successfully carve out a space for herself in historical romance with her fabulously fanciful and fiercely funny love stories. From its magnificently madcap plot to its wonderfully winsome characters, Ridley's (Nobody's Princess, 2022) latest perfectly calibrates every literary component of this dazzling romance to ensure maximum reading enjoyment.

Ridley continues her adventure Regency series, following My Rogue to Ruin, with Elizabeth's story--the skilled swordswoman who would rather meet a threat with a rapier than an elaborate disguise. She has a vast collection of blades, including her trusty--and sometimes doubly necessary--sword cane. When her family needs her to lead a case with inquiry rather than force, she is not happy but becomes intrigued when she arrives at the mission site, a castle, only to find it protected by clever traps. Inventor Stephen Lenox made them to protect the building from a dangerous braggart who believes he has a claim to ownership. With their missions aligned, the pair join forces and soon start to tumble into love, as they learn about each other's characters, skills, and desires. In particular, Elizabeth's need for bodily autonomy and Stephen's for space. The story unfolds with plenty of charm (Stephen invents a kitten dispensing machine) and action (there are multiple battles). Eventually the entire Wynchester clan shows up, adding to the wit and loving interactions. VERDICT Ridley once again showcases her skills crafting interesting characters and fun-reading plots, which stress accepting and supporting people in the ways they want.--Neal Wyatt
