Offering a rundown of required tools, she explains that handsaws are best for cutting large pieces, Japanese pull saws are ideal for making fine cuts, and coping saws are well-suited for curved cuts. Basic safety tips recommend that readers wear closed-toe shoes and fully dry out rags containing finishing oil, since they can spontaneously combust if scrunched up while wet. The easiest of the 15 projects include a rectangular serving platter and a cutting board with a handle; a bird box and small end table are among the more involved. Each project will help readers learn a new technique. For instance, the utensil holder introduces how to connect pieces with wood glue, and the plant stand requires joining pieces using the half-lap technique, “where two slots fit on top of each other.” Photos illustrating each step will help the uninitiated find their footing, though they may wish for further guidance on certain techniques, such as how to create evenly rounded edges.
