Grades 8-12 This entry in Oni Press' Quick & Easy Guides series is a friendly and conversational look at coming out. While acknowledging the actual process is frequently neither quick nor easy, the authors offer tips, suggestions, and support for anyone discovering their identity. Lighthearted moments such as superhero costume changes, cute cat facts, and astrology jokes are interspersed with sincere stories about the fluidity of labels, coming out as an ongoing journey, and dealing with hostile responses. Historical information is deftly woven into the narrative, such as the term coming out originally referring to entering queer society (similar to the notion of a debutante's coming out ball) rather than as a reference to closets. The author's focus on understanding the breadth of nuance possible in identities and in discussion creates a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere in which to learn, change, and find support. A simple glossary of terms and additional resources in the back complete a valuable package, both for young people exploring their own lives as well as anyone wishing to support them.
