"Magical stories unfurl with marvelous subtlety in this delightful collection from Klages."
Publishers Weekly, starred review
A rebellious child identifies with Maleficent instead of Sleeping Beauty. Best friends Anna and Corry share one last morning on Earth. A solitary woman inherits a penny arcade haunted by a beautiful stranger. A prep-school student requires more than luck when playing dice with a faerie. Ladies who lunch—dividing one last bite of dessert—delve into new dimensions of quantum politeness. At summer camp, a young girl discovers the heartbreak of forbidden love.
Whether on a habitat on Mars or in a boardinghouse in London, discover Ellen Klages' wicked, wondrous adventures full of cheeky wit, empathy, and courage.

Magical stories unfurl with marvelous subtlety in this delightful collection from Klages (The Green Glass Sea). Some are set in a variant of our own world, including “The Education of a Witch,” which builds a small girl’s fondness for Maleficent up to an ominous climax. Others transport readers elsewhere: “Friday Night at St. Cecilia’s” takes place inside several board games, where the player is at a fairy queen’s mercy. In “Amicae Eternum,” a young girl tries to absorb memories of Earth as she prepares to leave with her parents on a colony ship, and the astronaut in “Goodnight Moons” is already on Mars before she learns that her unexpected baby means she’s never going back home; both tales focus on the quiet moments and joy in life. The last two stories of the collection, “Woodsmoke” and “The Scary Ham,” are slices of life, not speculative at all. Queer characters appear often, warmly included without any fuss. The emotional impact of the stories is carefully managed in a way that’s meant to sweep readers up, not knock them down. The tie that binds these works together is humanity, lovingly and quietly explored no matter the genre. Agent: Jill Grinberg, Jill Grinberg Literary.

What would you miss if it was your last morning on Earth? Best friends Corry and Anna fantasize about what Corry will leave behind when she departs on a multigeneration space journey in "Amicae Aeternum." A little girl in "The Education of a Witch" discovers the appeal of becoming a wicked witch-queen, especially after she believes she is displaced in her parents' affections by a baby sister. Klages's (Portable Childhood; Scott O'Dell Award-winning The Green Glass Sea) second collection of short stories highlights a decade of the writer's work, articulating childhood wonders, supernatural situations, and sometimes the mere spirit of speculative fiction itself. VERDICT Klages's fans won't be disappointed by these poignant and relatable tales that push the barriers of the fantastical realism and beyond.--KC
