This is the fourth story featuring Dylan O'Connor after The Snowball Effect, Caught in the Act, and Rise of the Zombie Scarecrows.

Dylan O'Connor is in trouble again. While riding his bike home after dark, he has a run-in with a truck but doesn't give it a second thought until police show up at his door the next day. CCTV cameras put Dylan at the scene of a crime, and when the police question him, Dylan realizes he was an inadvertent witness. But he doesn't tell them the driver of the truck was Jeff Walker, a nasty piece of work. Dylan knows it's in his best interests to keep his mouth shut. Then he starts getting stalked by Jeff's weirdo sidekick, Eliot Barnes, a classmate of Dylan's. Is Eliot trying to protect Dylan, or is he making sure he stays silent?

This short novel is a high-interest, low-reading level book for middle-grade readers who are building reading skills, want a quick read or say they don't like to read! The epub edition of this title is fully accessible.

Gr 6 Up-The series, which focuses on contemporary issues, continues with four new installments. In order to attend camp, Max must help out with his brother Duncan, who has autism, while dealing with his mother's new boyfriend in Camped Out. In Winter Road, Kat is coping with the loss of her father and recent diabetes diagnosis while on a long-distance trucking job with her mother. When a mysterious truck nearly runs over Dylan in Payback, he gets sucked into the crime that he accidentally witnessed. In Shadow, Preston, who is legally blind, must find out who erased a film that was to be screened at his upcoming festival. Each book features characters dealing with authentic real-world issues, like living with disabilities and challenging relationships with parents. The writing is straightforward with uncomplicated, short sentences, but each plotline is immersive. VERDICT Written between a third and fourth grade reading level, this series will particularly appeal to middle school hi-lo readers.
