#1 New York Times bestselling author Iris Johansen explores the darkest corners of the human heart as forensic sculptor Eve Duncan closes in on the killer who stole her daughter so many years ago.
As a former Navy SEAL turned cop, Joe Quinn has seen the face of evil and knows just how deadly it can be. When he first met Eve Duncan, he never expected to fall in love with a woman whose life would be defined by her dual desires to bring home her missing daughter and discover the truth behind her disappearance—-no matter how devastating. With the help of CIA agent Catherine Ling, they make a shocking discovery that sheds new light on young Bonnie's abduction and puts Quinn squarely in the crosshairs of danger. Eve's first love, John Gallo, a soldier supposedly killed in the line of duty, is very much alive—-and very much a threat.
Emotionally charged, with one shock after another, Quinn reveals the electricity of Joe and Eve's first connection, and how they fell in love in the midst of haunting tragedy. As their search takes them deeper and deeper into a web of murder and madness, Joe and Eve must confront their most primal fears . . . and test their resolve to uncover the ultimate bone-chilling truth.

Bestseller Johansen's thrilling second entry (after Eve) in a special trilogy featuring forensic sculptor Eve Duncan finds Eve at the hospital bedside of her severely injured longtime lover, FBI agent Joe Quinn. The story flashes back to Joe and Eve's first meeting, when he arrives at her Atlanta doorstep to investigate the disappearance of Bonnie, her seven-year-old daughter. While Eve devotes herself to the search for Bonnie, she also joins Joe in his quest for clues in the mysterious disappearances of other children. Joe hopes that their friendship, based on mutual respect and honesty, will lead to more. As Eve seeks relentlessly to find closure in Bonnie's disappearance, she deliberately puts herself in harm's way to lure the killer connected with the missing children out in the open. Suspense kicks into high gear as the killer strikes very close to Eve. As the novel fast forwards to a present-day search for another killer, the pulse-pounding pace will leave readers breathlessly anticipating the final installment. 400,000 first printing.

In the second installment (after Eve, 2011) in Johansens trilogy about the fate of forensic sculptor Eve Duncans daughter, Bonnie, Joe Quinn is in a coma, welcoming the darkness, when Bonnies spirit draws him back to life. Joe recalls first meeting Eve when he was an FBI agent newly assigned to help Atlantas police locate her missing daughter. He had never felt an attraction like that before. He would do anything for Eve, including jeopardize his job as he joins her in the search for Bonnie. Eve, utterly self-reliant, had never had an equal partner until she met Joe. Now, as she faces the fear of losing him, nothing seems to matter until Joe begins to recover, and their CIA friend, Catherine Ling, launches the search for John Gallo, who nearly killed Joe. John, Eves first love, is Bonnies father and may be her murderer. Johansens latest has myriad twists and turns, making it an ideal middle book since fans eagerly seek the same answers that the characters do to the questions of who took Eves daughter and why. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Readers will keep pace as this heavily promoted, 400,000-copy per installment series by best-selling Johansen continues.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2011, American Library Association.)

Half of this book details how Eve Duncan and Joe Quinn met over the disappearance of Eve's young daughter, Bonnie, and the other half picks up right where the previous title, Eve, in Johansen's new trilogy left off; Joe is in the hospital with stab wounds, and friend Catherine Ling is off chasing John Gallo, who may be Bonnie's killer. Although the title emphasizes Joe, much of the plot is devoted to Catherine and John's rocky new relationship. The quest by Catherine and John to prove his innocence leads them to Louisiana bayous, but plans spin out of their control before leading to a cliff-hanger ending. Fans following the Eve Duncan story will have to wait until October for the third volume, Bonnie. Although suspenseful and entertaining, this title lacks its predecessor's punch. The parallel but different stories do not feel as though they belong in the same book. VERDICT Lopsided, but an integral read for fans of Johansen's Eve Duncan series.
