Spy Ben Calix's operation and cover in Rome is blown when an informant attacks him, then gets away. He and his team split up, with Ben tracking the informant, only to watch him die a gruesome death from a bioweapon. Convinced the bioweapon is the work of a terrorist organization he's been tracking, Ben returns to his home in Paris to narrowly escape a sniper and French police. He's received a severance from the Company and is now persona non grata. As Ben tries to reclaim his life in the shadows and prevent a bioweapon from being unleashed on the world, he struggles against betrayals from every side and the realization he has few people left to trust. VERDICT Hannibal (Chasing the White Lion) writes a fast-paced, quick read thriller with crossover romantic elements loosely based on the Book of Job. Ben is often told to rely on faith, but otherwise this could be a secular novel, since the faith isn't implicitly religious. Recommended for libraries where Hannibal's books are popular.-- Melanie C.
