The first sentence of Leong's latest reads, "The first time we met, I bit her." What happens next is an entirely unique perspective. This horror graphic novel has three main characters: Ilsa, the owner of the house, who loves to hunt and partake in all that comes with preparing her prey; Marie, Ilsa's newly hired maid; and our narrator, the house, where Ilsa has lived her entire life and Marie has begun to work. The story is told in a sophisticated, lyrical voice, and readers see Ilsa and Marie growing closer to each other as Marie deals with demons at her own home, which drive her to take refuge at Ilsa's. The illustrations are tonally and visually dark, drawn in a detailed black-and-white palette with red and pink used as an accent in many frames, particularly the more-gruesome ones. The writing style and story carry a heavy Edgar Allan Poe feel, so readers of gothic horror will likely find enjoyment in this book, as will the expected horror-comics fans.
