Ivy and her grandmother, Meg the Healer, live in the tidy village of Broomsweep. Well, most of the village is tidy. Things at Ivy's home tend to get messy, due to the magical creatures that come seeking Grandmother's help. But how can they turn away a three-legged-griffin who needs help with his landings, or a dragon with terrible cold?Katherine Coville's magical story, both wise and laugh-out-loud funny, comes to vivid life in this full cast recording, which features long time FCA favorites Carmen Viviano Crafts as narrator and Cynthia Bishop as Grandmother, along with our sensational new find Haley Grogan as Ivy.

In a story infused with gentle magic, Ivy and her grandmother Meg, a healer, live in a cluttered cottage in the otherwise pristine village of Broomsweep. Having learned of Meg’s abilities, sick and injured woodland animals frequently arrive at the cottage seeking help, as do occasional magical creatures—a three-legged griffin and a dragon with the sniffles, most recently. When the queen announces a contest to select the best town in the kingdom, the mayor’s cantankerous wife and other neighbors fear that Ivy and Meg will mar the town’s image, but when trolls invade, the animals protect the community. Coville creates a cozy fairy-tale-like atmosphere in a story that celebrates nonconformity and kindness. Final art not seen by PW. Ages 7–10. Author’s agent: Jennifer Laughran, Andrea Brown Literary.

Carmen Viviano Crafts and a full cast of narrators deliver a whimsical fantasy in which humans interact with real and mythical animals. Ivy and her grandmother live on the edge of a tidy town called Broomsweep, where they have an untidy garden full of unruly creatures who need tending. When a contest for the best town in the kingdom is announced, the mayor's wife, Mrs. Peevish, is determined to win, even if it means forcing out an injured griffin, a congested dragon, and flock of pixies. While children may find the performances enjoyable, especially that of young Haley Grogan as Ivy, adults may find the portrayals of the characters to be stereotypical and overly dramatic.
