A rich, immersive, funny and heartbreaking memoir of the charming bookseller who runs two tiny bookshops in the remote village of Manapouri in Fiordland, in the deep south of New Zealand.

'An extraordinary story.' Shaun Bythell, The Diary of a Bookseller

Ruth Shaw weaves together stories of the characters who visit her bookshops, musings about favourite books, and bittersweet stories from her full and varied life.

She's sailed through the Pacific for years, been held up by pirates, worked at Sydney's Kings Cross with drug addicts and prostitutes, campaigned on numerous environmental issues, and worked the yacht Breaksea Girl with her husband, Lance.

Underlining all her wanderings and adventures are some very deep losses and long-held pain. Balancing that out is her beautiful love story with Lance, and her delightful sense of humour.

This will make you weep and make you laugh and make you want to read more books - and make you want to visit Ruth and her two wee bookshops.

At first glance, readers might believe Shaw's life is common and quaint. She begins by describing her Two Wee Bookshops, located in Manapouri, New Zealand, and provides anecdotes about the customers who pass through. But Shaw's story is far more than that of her bookshops. After surviving a sexual assault as a teenager, Shaw became pregnant and had to give up her son for adoption. She threw herself into adventure, taking all manner of jobs, from sailor to gambler to cook and more. Shaw is unafraid to take risks; she recounts a time when she "borrowed" a dress from a neighbor's clothesline because she needed it for an interview. Anytime she felt restless, she'd run away, traveling to Papua New Guinea or Australia. It wasn't until she was reunited with Lance, the love of her life in their youth, that she settled down in Manapouri. Despite the deep tragedies that Shaw has faced--including the loss of a second pregnancy and the dissolution of two marriages--she maintains a spunky and positive voice, producing a delightful and fascinating memoir.
