Having jeopardized their careers in an unauthorized investigation that threatened to reveal the corruption in South Africa's halls of power, Benny Griessel and Vaughn Cupido have been demoted from the elite Hawks police unit. While waiting to be transferred from Cape Town to seemingly mundane duty in Stellenbosch, Griessel receives a disturbing, anonymous letter: "I can only trust you and Captain Cupido. There is an adder in our bosom. Be careful of phone calls." Assigned to investigate the disappearance of Callie de Bruin, a young university student and brilliant computer programmer, they hit dead ends until the trail, including the death of a fellow officer, leads to a series of gun heists and the alarming absence of certain weapons from the police registry. As Griessel and Cupido intensify their search for de Bruin, real estate agent Sandra Steenberg confronts her own crisis: state corruption has caused the real estate market to crash, exacerbating the dire financial straits facing her family. When billionaire Jasper Boonstra contacts her to represent a major property he wants to sell, she pushes aside her concerns about his reputation as playboy and swindler. And then Boonstra himself disappears, and Griessel is forced to juggle between Boonstra's bitter wife, protective lawyer, and Steenberg, the last person to see him alive.

Narrator Saul Reichlin stays calm, but listeners will get caught up in the chaos that starts and ends this audiobook. The mystery--concerning the connection between a missing computer hacker and a realtor's big deal--takes awhile to unfold, but that's to allow for character development. The South African accents are fully comprehensible as Benny Griessel and Vaughn Cupido, two top cops, are demoted after a case goes wrong. Reichlin's even tone helps hit home the frustration and drudgery of their investigation, and he captures the suspenseful and ironic moments later on. Listeners will find themselves absorbed by the South African police corruption and chance events that are depicted in this procedural. J.A.S. © AudioFile 2022, Portland, Maine

In this seventh book (after The Last Hunt) in the "Benny Griessel" mystery series, Benny and Vaughn Cupido have been demoted from the elite Hawks patrol unit in the South African police force. They are reassigned to mundane jobs in another unit, where they immediately get put on a missing-person case. Following many twists and turns to find the missing boy, they soon see that his disappearance is part of a much larger series of crimes. Meanwhile, Real Estate agent Sandra Steenberg takes on client Jasper Boonstra, an arrogant playboy billionaire currently involved in a very public scandal. Steenberg is in financial trouble and badly needs the commission the property sale will give her. When Boonstra goes missing, Griessel and Cupido get that case as well. The two cases come together, revealing corruption at the highest levels. The author delivers a host of interesting, funny characters and a story packed with murder and mayhem. Narrator Saul Reichlin enlivens the story translated from Afrikaans by K.L. Seegers. Reichlin delivers South African accents as appropriate and distinctive voices for the many characters. VERDICT Recommended for those who enjoy listening to mystery and to fans of the author.--Joanna M. Burkhardt
