NATIONAL BEST SELLER • A NEW YORK TIMES BEST CRIME NOVEL OF THE YEAR • GMA BUZZ PICK • “A bravura feat of storytelling...daring and completely satisfying.” —James Patterson, #1 best-selling author
A PULSE-POUNDING PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER ABOUT A SERIAL KILLER NARRATED BY THOSE CLOSEST TO HIM: HIS 13-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER, HIS GIRLFRIEND—AND THE ONE VICTIM HE HAS SPARED
"Intelligent and suspenseful." —Paul Tremblay, author of The Cabin at the End of the World
“All…of the expected suspense and psychological tension, but offering a story about women—the ones who didn’t know the evil that lurked within, the ones who tried to placate or fight but still perished, the ones who might actually survive. Haunting but never prurient…truly unforgettable.” — Alafair Burke, author of The Wife

Aidan Thomas is a hard-working family man and a somewhat beloved figure in the small upstate New York town where he lives. He’s the kind of man who always lends a hand and has a good word for everyone. But Aidan has a dark secret he’s been keeping from everyone in town and those closest to him. He’s a kidnapper and serial killer. Aidan has murdered eight women and there’s a ninth he has earmarked for death: Rachel, imprisoned in a backyard shed, fearing for her life.
When Aidan’s wife dies, he and his thirteen-year-old daughter Cecilia are forced to move. Aidan has no choice but to bring Rachel along, introducing her to Cecilia as a “family friend” who needs a place to stay. Aidan is betting on Rachel, after five years of captivity, being too brainwashed and fearful to attempt to escape. But Rachel is a fighter and survivor, and recognizes Cecilia might just be the lifeline she has waited for all these years. As Rachel tests the boundaries of her new living situation, she begins to form a tenuous connection with Cecilia. And when Emily, a local restaurant owner, develops a crush on the handsome widower, she finds herself drawn into Rachel and Cecilia’s orbit, coming dangerously close to discovering Aidan’s secret.
Told through the perspectives of Rachel, Cecilia, and Emily, The Quiet Tenant explores the psychological impact of Aidan’s crimes on the women in his life—and the bonds between those women that give them the strength to fight back. Both a searing thriller and an astute study of trauma, survival, and the dynamics of power, The Quiet Tenant is an electrifying debut thriller by a major talent.

In this dazzling debut thriller from journalist Michallon, handsome Hudson Valley family man Aidan Thomas has a ghastly secret in his shed—and even worse ones hidden elsewhere. He’s a serial killer prone to kidnapping his victims whose story emerges gradually, from multiple female narrators: Emily, a lonely bartender who befriends Aidan in hopes of a romantic fling; his 13-year-old daughter, Cecilia; and his latest, still-living victim, whom Aidan insists call herself Rachel. When Aidan and Cecilia are forced to move after Aidan’s wife dies, “Rachel” convinces Aidan he can safely take her with them (with the explanation to Cecilia that she’s a friend of a friend who needs a place to live). In the new living situation, though, Rachel gets bold, befriending Cecilia and planting seeds for her freedom, no matter how risky. The ensuing match of wits and wills between Rachel and Aidan becomes almost excruciating in Michallon’s skillful hands, and as challenging as the going can get, it’s impossible to look away from. This is a smart, female-focused inversion of the serial killer thriller perfect for readers who otherwise wouldn’t give the genre a second look. Agent: Stephen Barbara, InkWell Management.

Aiden Thomas acts like a wonderful father and husband, but inside lurks a depraved serial killer. Twelve narrators, including the author, weave this story of despair, hope, and faith. Gilli Messer portrays Rachel, the woman in the shed, whom Aiden kidnapped but never killed. Messer gives a spectacular performance as his brainwashed prisoner of five years. Valerie Rose Lohman voices Aiden's 13-year-old daughter, Cecilia, who loves her father dearly but knows not to cross him. Elena Rey is no less powerful as Emily, an almost-victim who bonds with Cecilia and Rachel and seals Aiden's fate. The remainder of the cast are Aiden's victims, who reveal the depth of his depravity in their own chapters. A riveting and unforgettable presentation. E.E.S. Rachel lives in a shed where her unnamed captor has kept her for years. She has learned how to survive in confinement, but everything changes when her captor is forced to move. There's no easy place to hide a kidnapped woman in the new house, so Rachel is presented to her captor's daughter Cecilia as a family friend who needs a place to stay. Although she is still confined, Rachel starts to learn more about her captor--his name is Aidan, and he's an upstanding community member who is casually dating Emily, a local restaurant owner. Also, he has a basement room full of secrets--and evidence. Can Rachel escape without endangering Cecilia's life? Three primary narrators anchor this multivoiced performance: Gilli Messer embodies Rachel's vulnerability and will to live; Valerie Rose Lohman voices the teenage Cecilia; and Elena Rey portrays Emily, whose fascination with Aidan is all the more sinister when listeners learn what he's done. A chorus of additional voices share the stories of other vulnerable women captured by a predator. VERDICT A chilling debut thriller about the evil that lurks in everyday middle-class neighborhoods, performed by a stellar cast. Ideal for fans of Rene Denfeld and Jennifer Hillier.--Nanette Donohue
