Irena Sendler

Bringing Life to Children of the Holocaust

Irena Sendler was born into a Catholic family in Poland in 1910. Her father, a physician, instilled in her compassion for patients others refused to treat, particularly poor Jews. Throughout the German occupation in World War II, Irena worked tirelessly to help save Poland's Jews from the Nazi horror. Convincing Jewish families to give up their children and Catholic families to risk their own lives by taking them in, Irena saved at least 2,500 Jewish children from certain death during the Holocaust. By the time of her death in 2008, Irena had been honored by the governments of Poland and Israel, Pope John Paul II, and many of those she had rescued.

Gr 5-7-Sendler was a "righteous Gentile" who saved the lives of many Jews in Poland during the Holocaust. This biography interweaves her life story with information about World War II. Sidebars focus on various aspects of the war. Despite Sendler's dramatic life, the text is emotionless and dry. Chronology is not strictly followed, and facts about the war are thrown at readers in a scattershot way. Children without background knowledge of the era will find the book confusing, and they never get a real sense of Sendler as a person. Black-and-white photos break up the text, but are too small for viewers to connect with on an emotional level.-Heidi Estrin, Congregation B'nai Israel, Boca Raton, FL
