After the battle in which the men of the destroyer Walker and their Lemurian allies repelled the savage Grik, Lieutenant Commander Matthew Reddy is shocked by the arrival of a strange ship captained by one Commaner Jenks of the New Britain Imperial Navy—an island-nation populated by the descendants of British East Indiamen swept through the rift centuries before.


With the Walker undergoing repairs, Reddy already has a great deal on his hands. For the Grik will return, and Reddy will need all hands on deck to fight them off when they next attack. But Jenks's uncertain loyalties make Reddy question whether he can trust the man.

      American and Japanese soldiers find themselves continuing WWII on a "twisted, alien Earth," with cat and insect people joining the fray. The third in a series, MAELSTROM starts in the midst of the war. William Dufris puts life--and voices that have a ring of familiarity--into the stock characters, making them believable as soldiers in a bizarre situation. His performance adds to a sense of wonder in the first half of the novel as the alien world is established and explored. The freshness of the first half evaporates as the fighting begins. Anderson raises questions about the morality of chemical warfare, genocide, and summary execution in wartime while holding out the possibility of diplomacy with relentless killers.
